Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English singer and composer who was a founding member of Genesis, and after leaving that band, has gone on to a massively successful solo career and worked on the soundtracks for a number of motion pictures. He founded Genesis in 1967 with fellow Charterhouse School pupils Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, and drummer Chris Stewart, and was the lead singer and primary lyricist for the band, in addition to contributing flute, percussion and theatrical visuals. He left the band in 1975 after the artistic difficulties surrounding the production of the ambitious concept album The Lamb Lies down on Broadway. His first solo album was released in 1977, and in general he has pursued a more song-oriented path than the elaborately composed music of Genesis during his tenure. He was among the earliest popular Western artists to incorporate music from Africa into his music, working extensively with artists such as Youssou N'Dour, Ayub Ogada, and others.
