Bio / info
Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (June 12, 1941 – February 9, 2021) was an American jazz keyboardist born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, known as being one of the definitive keyboard players of the birth of jazz fusion with his band Return to Forever. He first came to wide attention playing with Miles Davis in his electric band in the late 60s, then went on to form Circle with Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton, and Barry Altschul. Return to Forever debuted in 1971, first in a mostly acoustic format with a Latin flavor, featuring Flora Purim (vocals), Airto Moreira (drums, percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), and Joe Farrell (woodwinds). After two albums, Purim, Moreira, and Farrell left, and Corea reformed the group in a more fusion-oriented style with Lenny White (drums) and Bill Connors (guitar). This group achieved prominence, and later Al DiMeola replaced Connors, lasting until 1977, when Corea again shook things up by leaving White and DiMeola behind, bringing Farrell back and adding Gayle Moran (vocals) and a horn section. That incarnation lasted for one album and a tour before disbanding entirely. Corea went on to a wide range of projects, from solo piano to his Elektric Band, Akoustic Band, and various small groups. He died in 2021 at the age of 79.
