He worked extensively with Edward Vesala, Don Cherry, Zbigniew Seifert, Chico Freeman, Howard Johnson, Cecil Taylor, and many others. Many of his recordings have been released by ECM, an association that began in the mid-70s. » Read more

Soft Machine Set to Release New Music – It's been 50 years since The Soft Machine changed the face of music with their first album. Their blend of psychedelic rock and jazz was unique, and while the band went through many changes before disbanding in 1981 — by which time there were no original members remaining — they remained an innovative force with a style all their own. » Read more

Rumblin Orchestra - Spartacus – Spartacus by Rumblin' Orchestra is led by Hungarian keyboardist and composer Ella Bela. This release is technically fine, but is somewhat a rehash of things that have been done better before. Bela is...  (1999) » Read more

The Pineapple Thief - Variations on a Dream – I hope I don’t turn anyone off by saying Pineapple Thief has as much in common with Radiohead, Coldplay, and Smashing Pumpkins as they do with anyone in the prog community. In my book, that’s not...  (2004) » Read more

Death Organ - 9 to 5 – This is some heavy stuff! If crunchy swirling Hammond B3 at full volume through Leslie speakers — accompanied only by bass and drums — is something that might interest you, then listen up. Death...  (1995) » Read more

Graham Collier - Hoarded Dreams – On a purely practical level, this release is hard to categorize. It is the first wide appearance of a performance from the Bracknell Jazz Festival in 1983, so it is both a new release and an archival...  (2008) » Read more

Mellow Candle - The Virgin Prophet – As the CD liner notes state, Mellow Candle's Swaddling Songs is the holy grail of folk rock. There really is no other album that even compares in this specific genre (Fairport Convention,...  (1996) » Read more
