Shooting at the Moon —
The Moonjune Interview

Cover art Leonardo Pavkovic has been a supporter of progressive rock and jazz for over 25 years. Beginning as a label rep in New York City, he eventually became the founder of the one of the last true American-based labels supporting diverse international artists and music across the globe. Pavkovic has a passion for Indonesian music, which has been his label’s focus for the last few years.  » Read more

Reviving the Charm of Prog —
Meet Proud Peasant

Cover art Austin, TX, long known as the musical capital of Texas, is normally associated in non-Texan minds with Willie Nelson and outlaw country bands. But Austin also hosts the annual South By Southwest (SXSW) musical and media extravaganza, which involved many musical styles. Most people don’t realize that Austin was the home of what was arguably the first psychedelic band, The 13th Floor Elevators. In addition, there is the annual Austin Psych Festival and Roky Ericson’s Ice Cream Social that bring bands like Acid Mothers Temple to Austin. Austin is also an incubator for progressive rock bands like House of Never, The Invincible Czars, Thirteen of Everything, and most recently Proud Peasant.  » Read more

New Kid in the Crimson King's Court —
The Jakko Jakszyk Interview

Cover art Jakko Jakszyk is one of those working musicians who seems to have spent most of his career under the radar of most listeners, but his resume includes a who's-who of English pop, rock, and progressive rock. Perhaps his most high profile work has been with the 21st Century Schizoid Band, playing mostly classic King Crimson music from the 70s, but Robert Fripp tapped him for the 2014 reformation of Crimson itself. I was happy to catch Jakko in a brief period in between rehearsals for the upcoming US Crimson tour this fall.  » Read more

Still Talking to the Sun —
The Andy Anderson Interview

Cover art Drummer Andy Anderson may not be a household name to most American or even most European music fans. But he has been an essential part of a number of high profile acts, having worked with Steve Hillage and later the Cure, making him an strong candidate for an under-the-radar kind of interview. I got acquainted with the him via Facebook, and I was quite delighted to see him agree to an email exchange that further shows his broad influences as a player and composer.  » Read more

Still Not Chasing the Fan-Base —
The Djam Karet Interview

Cover art With 30 years of making music together and 17 studio releases behind them, the members of Djam Karet have much to be proud of. The band has received outstanding reviews from the music press and respect from great musicians all over the world, but still operate on the remote fringes of popularity – pretty much by choice. This lack of willingness to compromise their vision has earned them a unique place in the world of instrumental progressive rock. Exposé was able to catch up with several members of this enigmatic ensemble following the release of their latest studio album.  » Read more

From Canterbury with Love —
Meet Syd Arthur

Cover art It’s only been a few quick years since Syd Arthur emerged from obscurity to claim the mantle of heirs apparent to the legacy of revered progressive outfits such as Caravan, Soft Machine, and Gong. Their debut LP, On an On, was released in 2012, and its heady mixture of psych, jazz, blues, folk, and rock, made the band an instant hit on the sprawling UK festival scene. It didn’t take long for these four young lads from Canterbury to gain the attention of festival organizers across the pond and in 2013 they picked up new fans at SXSW and Coachella.  » Read more

Rock in Involuntary Opposition —
The Salim Ghazi Saeedi Interview

Cover art "Expect the unexpected" is a common phrase in English, a joke on some levels, sage advice on others. The music created by Iranian composer Salim Ghazi Saeedi is a case in point. What do you expect an electric guitarist from Iran to sound like? Do you expect that there are electric guitarists in Iran? He makes the music he hears in his head, and we call it progressive, RIO, chamber rock, and so on, but to him it is what's inside.  » Read more

Proving It Every Night —
The Jamison Smeltz Interview

Cover art These days Jamison Smeltz can mostly be found with an alto sax in his mouth, off to one side of the stage with miRthkon, one of the bright spots in American progressive music. Heavy guitars meet woodwinds in miRthkon's complex music, and they've graced stages in North America and Europe at festivals including RIO (Carmeaux, France) and Seaprog (Seattle) — and that's just 2013. But before joining miRthkon, Smeltz played with a wide variety of other artists in a dizzying array of styles. I sat down with him after their performance at Seaprog in June 2013.  » Read more

Across the Universe —
The Robin Taylor Interview

Cover art Out of seemingly nowhere in the early 1990s, Danish composer and multi-instrumentalist Robin Taylor appeared on the scene with his debut album Essay. A few years later saw the eponymous debut of his studio band project Taylor’s Universe, which to date has released close to a dozen CDs. From around 2002 Taylor also led a live improvisational band Taylor’s Free Universe, with a half-dozen recordings to their credit. Taylor was kind enough to sit down with Exposé and talk about his musical origins and interests, as well as his future plans.  » Read more
