The Winter Residence is the latest collaboration between British multi-instrumentalist Mike Seed and R. Loftiss of The Gray Field Recordings. Their debut album, How the Night Falls, presents eleven tracks in just under forty minutes, traversing territory somewhere between dark folk, wyrdfolk, hauntological folk, and experimental folktronica. Ethereal vocals drift through indistinct electronic textures, field recordings, and spectral atmospheres that often seem to exist at the edge of perception. Information about who plays what is sparse, though Seed appears to be responsible for much of the album's vocal presence, with Loftiss contributing along the way. The music itself offers few firm reference points. "Wrong Number" unfolds around a one-sided telephone conversation. "Hello? Hi? Is that you?" becomes less an exchange than a fragmentary intrusion from another reality. "The Princess of Maps" layers surreal narration against a backdrop of electronics that gradually engulf the spoken word, while "Hide Therefore Thine Eyes" feels like a half-remembered dream sustained by throbbing, muffled tones. By contrast, "Act of Devotion" is unexpectedly hypnotic, its cushioned drones drawing the listener into a state somewhere between comfort and unease. One further example should suffice. "Randall's Ghost," their unsettling reimagining of the traditional ballad "Lord Randall," demonstrates how effectively the duo can transform familiar material into something deeply uncanny. While not quite as disturbing as Loftiss' She Sleeps to the Sound of Knives, which I reviewed several years ago, How the Night Falls is nevertheless an album steeped in shadows and ambiguity. Its ghostly atmospheres and disquieting dream logic make it sound less like a summer release than a soundtrack for late October evenings, when darkness arrives early and familiar surroundings begin to feel slightly unfamiliar.
