The new Pinhdar album, Comfort in the Silence, the third Fruits de Mer release by the Italian duo, finds Cecilia and Max refining the distinctive sound they have been developing over the past several years. Their blend of trip-hop, dream-pop, dark wave, new wave, and electronica feels more assured and cohesive than ever, with rich atmospheric textures providing the foundation for Cecilia's crystal-clear, emotionally resonant vocals. At times I was reminded of a kinder, gentler Siouxsie and the Banshees, though Pinhdar inhabit a dreamier and more introspective sonic landscape. There is an unmistakable dialog between the 80s and the present running throughout these nine tracks, as vintage post-punk and new wave sensibilities are filtered through contemporary production. Opening track "After the Fall" immediately draws the listener into Pinhdar's immersive world with lush guitar chords, shimmering ambience, and a strong melodic core. From there, the album unfolds with remarkable consistency, balancing mood and melody in equal measure. Max's atmospheric guitar work serves as a connective thread throughout the record, often favoring texture and atmosphere over conventional solos. His dark-wave sensibilities shape the album's sonic identity without overwhelming the songs themselves. What impresses most is how natural the various influences feel. The trip-hop rhythms, electronic flourishes, dream-pop textures, and post-punk undertones are not presented as separate elements but as parts of a fully integrated whole. Many artists draw from similar sources, but Pinhdar avoids sounding derivative. Instead, they have reached a point where their influences have been absorbed into a sound that feels uniquely their own. Cecilia remains the focal point. Her voice possesses both clarity and emotional depth, delivering melodies that linger long after the music fades. Rather than demanding attention through power or theatricality, she draws the listener inward, complementing the band's introspective and cinematic approach. The songs often seem suspended between melancholy and hope, exploring emotional spaces that feel deeply personal while remaining broadly accessible. Comfort in the Silence is an album that rewards attentive listening. Its pleasures may be subtle at first, but repeated spins reveal layers of detail, atmosphere, and craftsmanship. More importantly, it demonstrates a duo operating with complete confidence in their artistic vision. Pinhdar no longer sound like a project combining various influences; they sound like artists who have fully arrived at their own identity.
