They only play a few live dates each year, so it’s not likely that those of us in the USA will ever get a chance to see Causa Sui without considerable expense, and a live album is probably the next best thing. There have been a couple live albums already. 2014’s Live at Freak Valley and 2017’s Live in Copenhagen both had much to recommend, as well does this latest live recording, Loppen 2021. Loppen is a legendary Copenhagen venue, located in the famous Freetown Christiania Commune — Causa Sui in their own backyard playing to an audience of about 400 live-music-starved people, one week after the Covid restrictions were lifted in Denmark. The show draws material from a number of their earlier studio recordings. One will hear “Mondo Buzzo” from Return to Sky, “Under the Spell” from Szabodelico, and reaching all the way  back to “El Paraiso” taken from the band’s very first album in 2005, but fans who like 2013’s Euporie Tide are in luck, with four cuts from that record presented in live versions here: “Mireille,” “Homage,” “The Juice,” and “Ju-Ju Blues” are all on offer, and the whole set of four instrumental LP sides (eight tracks) just smokes from beginning to end. No fan of the band will be disappointed, one can easily imagine being on hand for this performance. The band is the same as before, drummer Jakob Skøtt, keyboardist Rasmus Rasmussen, bassist Jess Kahr, and guitarist Jonas Munk; the telepathy that exists between these four players is astonishing, never just a rehash of the studio versions but instead a powerful enhancement in every case. One listen to “El Fuego” (from 2017’s Vibraciones Doradas) will convince any listener that Loppen 2021 is the band in their best element, maximum intensity, loose and free, and the lucky fans in the audience were soaking up every measure. This one is being released as a double LP only on colored vinyl, 1000 copies only.
