One of the icons of heavy rock, Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister, lost his battle to cancer yesterday, 28 December, 2015. The 70-year-old bass player and singer was best known as the frontman for Motörhead, but played with a number of other bands during his long career. Lothar Meid, Amon Düül II bassist, RIP

Bassist Lothar Meid, who was a founding member of Embryo, died on 3 November, 2015 in Hamburg. While not individually well-known, Meid was a key player in several of the central bands of the German rock scene of the 70s. He also composed a number of film soundtracks.  » Read more

Dieter Moebius RIP

Details are sparse at this point, but the sad news has come out that musical pioneer Dieter Moebius has died at the age of 71. Moebius first came to attention outside hardcore electronic circles when Brian Eno collaborated with Cluster, but his groundbreaking work with Hans Jaochim Roedelius was well known to the followers of Germany's innovative 70s scene.  » Read more

One of the great innovators of 20th Century music has died at the age of 85. Ornette Coleman revolutionized jazz during the 60s with his explorations of free expression, and has since that time been one of the great influences on musicians of all styles. John Renbourn, the Scottish guitarist and founding member of the influential folk-rock-jazz band Pentangle, has died at the age of 70. His elaborate style of playing, as well as his willingness to experiment with sounds from around the world, were hugely influential in the folk music as well as being precursors to what was later called World Music.  » Read more
