The reissue of Stand Up marks the availability of the entire Steve Morse back catalog on CD. Originally released by Elektra records back in the pre-CD days (at least for them), Stand Up represents a transitional period for Morse. There's more vocal tracks than any prior or subsequent Morse or Dregs release. About half of the songs have guest vocals by the likes of Albert Lee, Van Temple of the Producers, Eric Johnson, and Alex Ligertwood of Santana. Fellow Dregs alumni T. Lavitz and Mark O'Connor guest on keys and violin also. Morse's playing is fine throughout, but the songwriting it more hit or miss than one would expect. None of the vocal tracks sounds natural. Some of the instrumental pieces are less than memorable too. There are a few classic Morse pieces to be found though. "English Rancher," "Golden Quest," and "Unity Gain" are all solid examples of the trademark Morse style. Wedged in between the excellent releases The Introduction (1984) and High Tension Wires (1989), Stand Up definitely stands out as being a notch below both these recordings in the quality department. This one is recommended for hard-core Morse fans. Casual fans should get one of his other albums instead.
