Welcome Inside the Brain is one of many German bands whose music falls under the general label of psychedelic rock, but they have their own take on it. Johann Frische’s organ is quite prominent in the arrangements, and the guitar of Georg Spieß is as likely to be twangy as fuzzy. While there are definitely similarities to 70s organ-heavy bands like Atomic Rooster, their sound is distinctive. Frank Mühlenberg is a strong vocalist in the classic rock mode, and the rhythm section of Paul Lapp (double bass) and Hans Otto (drums) provide a perfect mix of power and feel to keep the songs from sounding ordinary. And yes, that does say “double bass,” which leads to one of the most unusual things about this band. How many psychedelic rock bands can you name that feature stand-up bass exclusively? To be honest, from listening to the album you might not immediately be aware that it’s not an electric bass, but there is a different feel to the low end here. Add that to the quality of the playing all around and the songwriting, and you’ve got a pretty appealing package. Queen of the Day Flies is a fine album, and Welcome Inside the Brain is definitely a band worth paying attention to.
