Tryon’s debut is a bold statement establishing the band instantly as a world-class chamber rock group operating the realm that blends jazz, modern academic composition, and RIO. Composer and bassist Kellen Mills, who might be remembered from his previous band, Alex’s Hand, leads a varying group of international musicians featuring Ganna Gryniva (lead vocals), Erik Leuthäuser (lead vocals), Lela Frite (lead vocals), Toms Rudzinskis (alto sax), Giovanni Chirico (bari sax), Omri Abramov (tenor sax, EWI), Ruben Bernges (guitar), Dante Uccello (piano, synths, electronics), Rieko Okuda (piano, synth), Henry Hahnfedt (drums), Diego Caetanno Guerra (drums, guitar), Jacopo Bazzarri (marimba, vibraphone), Kerem Eseman (flute), Dearbhla Nolan (trumpet), Schott Flynn (trombone), and Augustin Pardo (flute), some of whom only appear on a single track. Throughout the ten tracks, it is the sophistication of the compositions and arranging that is most evident, though the quality of the performances is also outstanding. Listeners might at times be reminded of Frank Zappa, Henry Cow, Gong, Samla Mammas Manna, or Mr Bungle, but the mixture is highly original and idiosyncratic in the best way. The winds and horns are used to great effect, with excellent ensemble writing as well as tasty solo spots. Bernges likewise gets in some great guitar work, whether working as part of the ensemble or stepping out front for a wild solo. The use of different lead vocalists from track to track contributes to a feeling that the album could be the audio portion of a non-linear stage show, a kind of avant-jazz-rock musical. Tryon is very much on the same wavelength as some of the bands from Lyon, especially Le Grand Sbam. Läuterung is full of good ideas well executed, and you can’t ask for much more than that.
