Spirits Burning — Reflections in a Radio Shower
(Musea Gazul GA 8647.AR, 2001, CD)
by Peter Thelen, Published 2002-09-01
Spaceheads take note. For the second Gazul label release, Don Falcone has assembled sixteen tracks featuring an impressive list of musicians from the neo psych and space-rock camps, including (among many others) Daevid Allen, Don Xaliman (Melodic Energy Commision), members of Mushroom, The Moor, ST37, Quarkspace, Strange Days emcee Thom the World Poet, and even texts read by the late Robert Calvert. While I’m not privy to the nuts and bolts of how this collaboration took place (Exposé will find out someday!), the result is a very dense yet navigable sonic maelstrom, with many layers of sound adding textures, psychedelic effects, shimmering gliss guitars, and voices to the basic tracks. There’s a lot going on in every track (readers can check out the track “Clear Audient” on last issue’s “Bay Prog” CD sampler for an example) and even after many listens, this writer is still hearing new as-yet undiscovered parts, sort of like the box inside the box inside the box... the discovery process continues. There are pieces which seem to be mainly instrumental, some with incidental spoken voices or tape loops, and others which seem to be composed as vocal pieces, like “Walking Shadows” (although sometimes the vocals are heavily treated and processed, like “Intelligent Sparking Fish”). There’s plenty of variety herein, between composed pieces and those which seem primarily explorative or improvised; that and the sheer sonic density keep it interesting over the long haul.
