We’ve covered a lot of current bands playing music built on the psychedelic and space rock of the 70s, and most of those bands lean towards the heavy side, playing songs based on big riffs. Prysma is a Greek band that takes a different tack, using subtler grooves and more atmosphere. Sometimes the vibe resembles Pink Floyd before Dark Side of the Moon, and by extension, some of the mellower aspects of Porcupine Tree, but I think they have their own twist on the style. Trifon Gentzis (drums) and Giannis Koutsos (bass) lay down great grooves that are jazzy in their looseness and slightly funky in a laid-back way. Spyros Delidimitriou and Konstantinos Diakakis provide guitars, with Delidimitriou contributing lead vocals and Diakakis adding keyboards. The guitar parts never touch on metal tones, instead working with a variety of cleaner sounds augmented by natural-sounding overdrive on some parts. There are usually multiple parts that fit together nicely. The lead lines have touches of the blues in them, and some classic rock wailing, but nothing that could be called “shredding.” Keyboards provide good support, with some Mellotron-like sounds. All around, Prysma presents a nice package, and Closer to Utopia is a solid and enjoyable listen, comforting in its familiarity but original enough to not sound like a rehash of the past.
