Anubis — The Unforgivable
(Bird's Robe BRR188, 2024, CD / LP / DL)

Anubis has been producing albums of melodic, progressive-inflected rock since 2009’s 230503, and by my count The Unforgivable is their sixth original studio release. (They’ve also released some live albums and acoustic reworkings of previous tracks.) The word cinematic is often thrown about in relation to Anubis, and it seems appropriate, even if pinning down its exact meaning is difficult. Sonically, you’ll hear aspects of Porcupine Tree, Muse, The Pineapple Thief, and The Mars Volta, with sections of atmospheric keyboards as well as some heavy guitar riffs. The Unforgivable is an ambitious concept album that tells the story of a person caught up in a religious cult, and it’s told in ten tracks that form a continuous suite. Vocally, the band is quite strong, both in lead and backing parts. The keyword here is dramatic — these performances are dripping with emotion and presented with a keen sense of tension and release. And while the album is clearly intended to be listened to as a whole, a couple of tracks have been separated out as singles with videos. The keyboard work abounds with both classic tones and modern touches. They have a fondness for vintage instruments and amplifiers, including “one of three working Mellotrons in Australia.” The music does not venture into any experimental or difficult territory, though it is full of tasty details, and should appeal to listeners who like their prog on the melodic side.
