Gathering of Legendary Elephant Monsters Cover art

When we last encountered G.O.L.E.M. we thought the acronym stood for Gravitational Objects of Light, Energy and Mysticism. Now two years later with their new album, it appears that the new definition is Gathering of the Legendary Elephant Monsters, still sounding quite contrived to spell out G.O.L.E.M. But don’t get hung up on their name, Gathering of the Legendary Elephant Monsters is a finely honed album that blends psychedelia, hard rock, and progressive elements with increasing confidence as a band. Their line up remains the same: Paolo Apollo Negri (organ and synthesizers), Emil Quattrini (electric pianos and Mellotron), Marco Zammati (electric bass), Francesco Lupi (drums), and Marco Vincini (vocals). The long instrumental sections, constant attention to melody, intricate arrangements, meticulous sound-crafting, powerful rhythms, and the plethora of vintage instruments are the foundation of their musical vision. If you love agressive Hammond organ dominated music, then Gathering of the Legendary Elephant Monsters is definitely a must have. It marks a definite evolution as a band with their feet firmly planted in 70s Italian progressive rock. Even though there is an obvious gothic element to the cover art, the new album is a step beyond their gothic first album, though “The Endless Night of Reason” and “Tale of the Oblivion Dance” bear some comparisons to Black Sabbath. Gathering of the Legendary Elephant Monsters is one solid album from the opening note to the last chord. I find it difficult to single out specific tracks. G.O.L.E.M. have taken their music to a higher level of care and mastery. Definitely an album worth investigating.
