Gravitational Objects of Light, Energy and Mysticism Cover art

To my simple mind, Gravitational Objects of Light, Energy and Mysticism is a name contrived just so the acronym spells G.O.L.E.M., a creature formed out of a lifeless substance such as dust or earth that is brought to life by ritual incantations and sequences of Hebrew letters. In this case G.O.L.E.M. is an Italian band with roots dating back 20 years to the Italian thrash metal band Wicked Minds, which performed all around Europe spreading their mix of hard and progressive rock. After fifteen years, Wicked Minds member Paolo Apollo Negri (keyboards and synths) brought together Marco Zammati (bass), Frances Colupi (drums), Emil Quattrini (piano and strings), and Marco Vincini (vocals) to form G.O.L.E.M. to further his mystical fusion of psychedelia, hard rock, krautrock, and progressive rock. Firmly anchored in the dark underground bands of the 70s, G.O.L.E.M. started by taking their musical vision live, and after five successful shows, they entered the studio to record Gravitational Objects of Light, Energy and Mysticism, a dark album of six tracks that combines elements of Procol Harum, It’s a Beautiful Day, Black Sabbath, and 70s gothic Italian prog rock.  The songs — all with English lyrics about evil succubi, demonic temptations, witches and wizards worshiping at The Logan Stone, trading one hell for another, and gothic protest songs — are worthy of Ozzie, especially Vincini’s vocals. In my opinion, the best song on the album is the fantastic “Five Obsidian Suns” that is perfect for Halloween and completely drenched in 70s trippy and mysterious psychedelia and Negri’s masterful Hammond organ chords and riffing. Gravitational Objects of Light, Energy and Mysticism is a pretty solid album that may just revive interest in gothic prog.
