Glutton — Skiva heter Vishnu!

Skiva heter Vishnu! Cover art

It’s been nearly ten years (and a few thousand other albums) since I first heard Glutton, with their second album, Outliers, and it’s been more than five since their last release, Eating Music, making Glutton atypical among Norwegian bands, most of whom seem ridiculously prolific. Skiva heter Vishnu! contains only four tracks, and if Google Translate is to be believed, the title means The Album Is Called Vishnu! Maybe a trivial little bit of meta-wordplay, but puts me in the mood to enjoy the music. Unlike previous releases, this one is entirely instrumental, but they’ve got enough ideas to maintain listeners’ interest throughout. The band is down to a trio now, with Ola Mile Bruland (bass), Jonas E. Hollund (drums), and Eirik Ørevik Aadland (guitar); there are some keyboard-like sounds on the album, and I don’t know if there are actual keyboards played by band members (or guests) or if it’s guitar with pedals to alter the sound. This is quite a change from Eating Music, with its large cast of guests. Stylistically, take generous helpings of psychedelic, space, progressive, and post rock and mash them together. Don’t pay too much attention to traditional structural ideas, just let it flow. They start the album with “Ørkensur,” which is thoroughly enjoyable, hard-hitting but melodic. There’s room for the music to breathe without going ambient, and the solos don’t feel indulgent. It’s all got a very live feel to it, and even the extended jamming of “Rematusenogennatt” doesn’t overstay its welcome — they limit themselves to ten minutes. Musically, Glutton is still a band of “outliers” in the best way.
