Causa Sui — Loppen 2024

This is a double album’s worth of intense fuzz-drenched instrumental psychedelic rock recorded live at Loppen in Copenhagen, a legendary venue where Causa Sui has played many times throughout their 20-year trajectory — in fact their previous live album Loppen 2021 (released in 2023) was recorded at this very same venue. It’s a place where the band is completely comfortable doing what they do best. And heavy it is, though moments informed by jazz peek through the multicolored gaseous clouds emanating from the stage. Fully half of the set is culled from the band’s most recent studio album, From the Source, including the 22-plus minute “Visions of a New Horizon” that winds its way through a number of portals, ever to surprise; the set opener “Sorcerer’s Disciple,” a freewheeling power jam that builds and sizzles as it winds into its eighth minute; and “The Spot,” a slow number where some jazzy factors enter the asylum, with moments very reminiscent of an instrumental Cream or early Nektar, with soaring guitars and keyboards dueling as the drums and bass drive through their power groove. The rest of the set draws from earlier studio endeavors, like the fuzz-wah colossus “Boozehound” from Euporie Tide, and two numbers, the jammy “Red Sun In June” (the first live release of that one) and set closer “Soledad” both taken from Summer Sessions 1 way back when in their pre-El Paraiso days; both of those sound absolutely stellar, as does everything Causa Sui does in a live setting. Now this set is available on double LP (12” + 10”) randomly colored vinyl in a limited edition of 1000 copies, or as a CD edition of 500, and of course if those are already gone, you’re probably out of luck unless they release it on download I suppose.
