Aerostation — Rethink
(Bandcamp Independent Artist Records, 2025, CD / DL)
by Jon Davis, Published 2025-12-22
Like Alta Forma’s recent album Trajectory, Aerostation’s Rethink presents a set of concise, prog-inflected rock full of catchy melodies, strong singing, and solid technical performances. Where Aerostation differs is in the instrumentation: there is no guitar, only the keyboards of Alex Carpani backed by bass (Jacopo Rossi) and drums (Gigi Cavalli Cocchi). Far from being a typical prog keyboard trio patterned after ELP, Aerostation has more mainstream rock ambitions, with accessible sounds and easily-digestible arrangements. There’s a touch of 80s pop metal in the sound, especially with Carpani’s keyboards often deliberately imitating guitar tones. Other references might be Asia or Toto. I can’t really fault the songwriting or the performances, but most of the tracks sail past my ears without making a lasting impression. There are a few exceptions, like “The Wait Is Over” and “Life Is Calling,” which contain some harmonic surprises, so even for a grumpy old man like me it’s not a total loss. Listeners longing for melodies that are easy on the ear but also have some energy and passion should give Aerostation a try.
