Alta Forma — Trajectory

Alta Forma’s Trajectory continues the, er, trajectory plotted on their debut, Spatium & Tempus from 2022. This is highly melodic, supremely technical rock music that I would describe more as prog-adjacent than actual progressive rock, but that’s neither here nor there. Some of the instrumental parts are so tight and shreddy they might seem like refugees from a metal album, but then you get the powerful clean vocals and keyboard backing and you’re in different territory. Alta Forma fits in with other contemporary groups that apply the techniques of prog with more mainstream rock, like McStine & Minnemann or Mike Keneally’s less experimental albums, and also such groups as District 97, IZZ, and 1974. There’s been no change in personnel, so bassist Antoine Fafard handles guitars as well as bass, Todd Sucherman plays drums and percussion, and JK Harrison plays keyboards and sings. Together they are a formidable entity, with chops to spare and plenty of good ideas. We’ve been hearing Fafard as a monster bassist for a long time now, but on Trajectory he shows that he can do it on guitar as well, with frequent blazingly fast solos. Sucherman is of the school of drumming exemplified by Marco Minnemann and Gavin Harrison — very busy, and incredibly precise. Add in Harrison’s powerful voice, with its impressive range and accuracy, and you’ve got a band that should appeal to a wide range of listeners.
