Yobrepus — A Rhizome Revolution - Part 2
(Apollon Records AP, 2024, CD / LP / DL)

by Jon Davis, Published 2024-11-19

A Rhizome Revolution - Part 2 Cover art

The second part of A Rhizome Revolution sees Yobrepus completing their concept in fine, if subdued, style. Compared to the first part, which came out earlier in 2024, these six tracks tend towards the quieter, more moody side of their style. The loud and energetic songs that peppered Part 1 are not at all in evidence here. The centerpiece of this album is “A Rhizome Revolution,” a ten-minute piece that exhibits the dynamics of a post-rock song, starting quietly and building to the loudest climax on the album, then dropping down and building up again, though with an oddly-filtered rock song, and finishing off with a slow decline into silence. I’m not sure if it’s fair to try to evaluate this album except as the second half of a larger work — certainly it has more sonic balance when considered that way. As it is, it seems a bit too mellow and melancholy to work on its own.
