Years After Cover art

Years After is a contemporary band based in Bergen, Norway, but most any listener who was presented with their music in a blindfold test would identify them as an American band of the mid-70s, maybe a side project by members of the Allman Brothers Band. They also count Little Feat and the Grateful Dead among their influences, and it shows. Your reaction to them will depend entirely on your feelings about those sources and whether you think there’s a need for current bands to emulate those sounds. That being said, the tunes are well-written, and I can’t fault the performances at all. “Fire” is notable for clever alternation of straight-eighths rhythms with shuffle time, and “Follow the Trail” has some tasty dual-guitar melodies. So if this is your thing, you could do a lot worse than putting on Years After and relaxing with your beverage of choice as the sun goes down over whatever it is that’s west of your location.
