Waking Dream — Peculiarities of Evolution!!!
(Bandcamp no#, 2020, DL)

More and more Russian bands are reaching out to us at Exposé. Some are excellent and fit in well with our remit, while others not so well. Case in point is the female-fronted Russian rock band Waking Dream and their EP Peculiarities of Evolution!!! Their promo material says their EP is their sixth release, an upbeat blend of hard rock, heavy metal, and punk. That sounds interesting. However, when you listen to the four songs, you get a different impression. Even though the EP only lasts about eleven minutes, each of the songs seems much longer than its three minute running time. The music is pretty lightweight with some hints of Buddy Holly and Joan Jett. But Waking Dream sounds like posers. They play it very safe, going through the motions, but in the end they just don’t deliver the goods. Lead singer Olga Karbusheva has a nice voice, but not the edginess needed for a rock and roll queen. Their entire sound is mellow, not at all what you would expect from hard rockers. The coolest thing about this EP is the hard rocker rooster on the cover.
