Varjo-Orkesteri — Seremonia
(Bandcamp Inverse Records, 2023, CD / LP / DL)

Hot on the heels of their debut album Prima Volta, Finnish metal prog band Varjo-Orkesteri just released their second album, Seremonia. Whereas Prima Volta was a breathtaking roller coaster ride, Seremonia is a kindler and gentler Varjo-Orkesteri. The metal guitar chords are still present, but without the raw energy of their debut. It feels lethargic in comparison and cannot hold a candle to Prima Volta. Several of the tracks just left me flat, and I had such high hopes for the band. Of the eleven tracks, “Sarastus” or “Dawn” stands out as quite different from the rest of the album with its tasty melodic prog rock. There is a definite 70s-80s vibe running through some of the tracks and a sense of Gentle Giant on “Palvosat.” The highpoint of the album is the opening track “Suunnistaja,” a fun danceable song. But overall, I would recommend Prima Volta over Seremonia.
