Use a tuner for the guitar? The hell with that! Už Jsme Doma's first album has lots of the same trademark zany quirks that defined their recent Pohádky Ze Zapotřebí in a somewhat rawer fashion. Compared to their latest studio release, Uprostřed Slov has even more rambunctious stops and starts, and a whistle (sort of) solo — not a human whistling, but one of those referee things. The band is still searching for their identity. In this early collection, the group experiments with some choir-style vocals in addition to the flat-out, often insane singing that they do so well. They also use more different horns and even the occasional flute. The drums aren't the all-stops-out frenzied that they are now either, he actually chills out now and again. Už Jsme Doma is difficult to pigeonhole into a single category, and that's great. Their music would be just as at home on a college "alternative" radio station as it would on a European folky rock channel or a progressive rock show. They aren't what most people would consider a textbook "crossover" band, but in a weird sort of way, they are just that. Their raw, in-your-face style of delivery can be unsettling, but the music is original, honest, and from the heart. That is always a great starting point.
