Chakra Vimana is a new project featuring some musicians we’ve encountered before. The group features Mark Cook (who is also in Herd of Instinct and The Forever Moment), Santtu Laakso (who is the main man behind Astral Magic), and Shane Beck, a poet who’s appeared on several Astral Magic releases. As you might guess based on the name, the main thrust of Chakra Vimana is on psychedelic grooves heavily informed by the sounds and spiritual ideas of India. Cook is responsible for his Warr guitars, in both fretted and fretless varieties, along with fretless bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion, electronics, and sitar; Laakso handles synthesizers, bass, and vocals; and Beck provides the words and voice, primarily spoken. Cook’s collaborator in The Forever Moment, Steven Leaks, provides electronic soundscapes. For my taste, the grooves they set up are really excellent, with interesting textures and great playing, but Beck’s spoken word sections are sometimes an unwelcome distraction. Other listeners may have different reactions, of course, so you’ll want to sample the music for yourself; and even I find that it doesn’t always bother me. In any case, there are plenty of instrumental sections where Beck is not active, and they’re good enough to warrant attention. Certainly any fans of the participants’ other music should find Chakra Vimana of interest.
