The oddly named Urlaub in Polen, German for Vacation in Poland, have released their first album in nine years. All is a collection of ten compositions (instrumentals and songs) by drummer Jan Philipp Janzen and multi-instrumentalist and singer Georg Brenner. The tracks vary in style, evoking Krautrock with developing sprawling synthesizer and guitar workouts over a foundation of finely woven rhythms. Here is a quick run down: “Void” is a short atmospheric soundscape with some odd metallic sounds; “Impulse Response” has a New Wave John Foxx / Ultravox vibe with delayed guitars, vocoded vocals, and driving beat; “2 Sec Delay” is a short piece based on a bubbly analog synth sequence; “T.H.D.T” consists of delayed and repeated vocals and sorrowful guitar; “Rodeo” is 42 seconds of buzzy electronics and panicked voices; “The Witcher” is an urban late night soundscape with mournful sax and a steady beat; “Overall” is essentailly a monotonous rhythm; “The Hunter” is another excursion back to New Wave with clashing metallic electronics, pulsating beat, and vocals; “LTS” is a liquid electronics piece with subliminal vocals evoking Cluster; and the closer “Proxy Music” is an eerie crystalline trance dance with a cool prog feel reminding me of Ralph Lundsten. Recommended for fans of unclassifiable music.
