Trust Us — Non-Zero-Sum Game
(Apollon Records AP110, 2022, CD / LP / DL)

Non-Zero-Sum Game Cover art

Trust Us is a new Norwegian post punk / post rock band consisting of Cato Olaisen on drums (Ribozyme and ex-Major Parkinson), Bård Kristinson on bass (Ribozyme), and René Miaje on guitar and vocals (Natt and ex-Krakow). Their debut album, Non-Zero-Sum Game, is actually more of an EP with five tracks spanning a total of 26 minutes. The music by and large is raucous post punk with its edges smoothed through heavy processing and unintelligible vocals way down in the mix. There are some quiet melodic moments peppered throughout that make things interesting. Think of a punk version of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and you will have an idea of what Trust Us sounds like. For me, the best track on the album is the title track that closes the album. This is a very strong track. The rest of the album is suitable as enjoyable background music.
