Tre Spiritus is an American trio consisting of drummer Rikki Davenport, guitarist Par Ljungstrom, and Dig on bass and keyboards. We’ve met Davenport before in the band Ovrfwrd, but the music of Tre Spiritus, aside from being instrumental, doesn’t have a lot in common with the progressive rock of Ovrfwrd. This is electric jazz-rock more focused on tasty grooves than complex arrangements or flashy playing. Ljungstrom mostly favors clean tones on his guitar, utilizing effects other than distortion to enhance his sound. More Metheny than Howe or Hackett. The ten tracks on their debut album cruise along nicely for a bit under 40 minutes, touching on a variety of moods and tempos, though never venturing into regions of high energy intensity. Dig’s funky bass part on “Memfis” underpins some punchy chords and an organ-like keyboard part that provides one of the album’s highlights; he gets funky again on “Mini Apple,” backing some of Ljungstrom’s most adventurous playing. The closer, “Gopher It,” has a section with an angular guitar riff that outlines some very interesting chords. Tre Spiritus is an easy-going release with plenty to recommend it for fans of jazz-rock that’s built more on good melodies than endless technical grandstanding.
