Tom Salvatori — Lullaby for Jude

Lullaby for Jude Cover art

This is an EP of four solo acoustic guitar pieces, two originals and two adaptations. Enjoyable as they are, they only clock in at around thirteen minutes total — it’s all over in the blink of an eye; one has to wonder why he doesn’t collect a few more pieces together to make an album that’s a little more substantive... But it is what it is, and one certainly can’t complain about the compositions, playing, and overall production. Tom Salvatori is one of two brothers (Michael is the other) who formed the core of the Chicago based progressive quartet Apocalypse, we reviewed their LP The Castle, created from demos recorded in 1976, finally released in 2022. This short set opens with the title track, a piece dedicated to Jude, an infant boy whom Salvatori’s family lost in childbirth, an introspective piece that definitely conveys some kind of loss. “With This Love” is a solo guitar arrangement of a piece from Peter Gabriel’s Passion, the soundtrack he made for The Last Temptation of Christ back in 1989. Following on with another original composition, “I Wait and Wonder,” another gentle guitar piece that seems to carry a touch of sorrow or loss. The closer is an adaptation of “Suite #1 from Peer Gynt, Op.46, 2nd Movement” by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1888), the longest piece here at just over four minutes. Four beautifully executed guitar pieces culminate here. Definitely a powerful, albeit brief, set.
