I described Tim Morse’s previous album, III from 2018, as “melodic rock with some progressive touches,” and the same description applies to Soundtracks as well. Morse covers a fair range of styles and moods in the fourteen tracks, starting out with the Beatlesque “Blueberry Way” — though it might be more accurate to say it resembles classic Klaatu, like “Everybody Took a Holiday” off of Sir Army Suit (1978). It’s a mid-tempo romp based around jaunty piano chords with some stylistically appropriate tempo changes. “Cityscape” dabbles in electronic rock something like late-70s Synergy; “Broken Compass” is a moody song with acoustic guitar that sounds like a sketch for a Porcupine Tree song, just missing the epic instrumental ending that gets heavier and heavier; “Balance” brings in accordion and banjo, inexplicably reminding me of Anthony Phillips; and the title track sounds a bit like something that might have come off a Tony Banks solo album. There are also some instrumental tracks that function as interludes — rather sparse and simple using a variety of instrumentation. Aside from the artists mentioned, an overall reference would be Camel, say around the time of Nude (1981), though without much guitar presence. There’s also a cover of John Lennon’s “Mind Games,” with a much more elaborate keyboard arrangement than the original. All in all, it’s a pleasant album that offers a lot for fans of progressive rock that’s on the mellow and melodic side.
