The Jacks — Box
(Mega Dodo DODLP39, 2025, LP / DL)

After the release of The English EP, a lovely little gem of jangly power pop, Mega Dodo has a full LP of music by The Jacks (at least that’s what they’re calling it — at 18 minutes, it’s really another EP). And while there are three songs here that were also on the EP, these are new recordings, even with different lyrics in one case. “Always Love You,” “Where I Should Be Now,” and “Touch and Go for Broke” were recorded from 2021 to 2023, and the great song “Lonely Girl” dates from 1983. The other four songs here (Side 2 of the vinyl) date from a 1978 session by Tulsa Jacks that was never released. The tracks have been remastered from the original two-track masters, and the sound is pretty good considering the age of the source. Better than “pretty good,” really, quite solid and enjoyable. “I’m Falling,” “All in a Day,” “Yes I Do!” and “Baby You Know” are all catchy tunes in the same idiom — this band has been remarkably consistent (if not prolific) for decades. Eight songs, not a one over three minutes long, and not a second wasted. I could listen to a whole lot more of this.
