The Honey Pot — The Happiness Explosion
(Mega Dodo no#, 2024, 2LP / DL)
by Henry Schneider, Published 2024-11-20
The Honey Pot is about to unleash their latest double LP The Happiness Explosion on December 20, 2024, if the record plant cooperates. Four sides containing seventeen of the brightest and happiest songs these neo-psychers have released to date. Icarus Peel, Crystal Jacqueline, and bandmates have hit their stride with The Happiness Explosion. Be it from Icarus’ psych guitar chops, Jacqueline’s outstanding swirling organ and vocals, or Icarus’ compositional skills, there is not one dull moment across its 83 minutes. I really don’t know where to begin with this review. The final track “How Was That for You?” sums it all up, WOW! Along the way The Honey Pot flirts with The Byrds on “Please Let Me In,” Hawkwind on “The Otherworld,” Pink Floyd on “One Golden Afternoon,” and other 60s and 70s bands. And on this album I don’t detect any Hendrix influence on Icarus’ guitar playing. Lots of trippy and surreal songs to whet everyone’s appetite: “Stuck in Starless Beauty,” “The Mushroom and the Peach,” “The Green Procession,” and “Clouds Behaving Oddly” to name a few. Each of the seventeen songs is different and strong enough to stand on its own. Overall The Happiness Explosion clearly demonstrates The Honey Pot’s love of classic psychedelia carefully updated and meticulously crafted for 2024 and beyond. The Happiness Explosion is a contender for one the best albums of 2024. If you have never experienced The Honey Pot or Crystal Jacqueline’s solo work, The Happiness Explosion is a great place to begin exploring the music of these incredible musicians.
