The Hegramatics — Gefühlswallung
(Bandcamp Right Brain Records RBR, 2026, DL)

Seattle is a city which is home base for a number of very talented and creative musicians. I suppose that’s true of most other cities, but I live in Seattle, so that’s what I know. Within the city’s community of experimental and boundary-pushing artists, the three responsible for Gefühlswallung are certainly in the top ranks — not that it’s a competition! Amy Denio is well known around the world and here at Exposé; Greg Campbell is one of the area’s top drummers; and Heather Bentley’s cello and viola have appeared in many settings and collaborations with other artists. Combining the first two letters of each musician’s first name, they came up with The Hegramatics as a label for this project, which was conceived in memory of harpist Carol J. Levin, a fellow musical explorer who tragically passed away in 2025. Levin herself appears on two tracks by way of archival recordings that have been incorporated into the pieces. While the music is essentially improvised, and does at times approach chaotic density, nothing here is grating or particularly “difficult.” Denio contributes accordion, clarinet, alto saxophone, ukulele, and voice, providing a great range of timbres on her own, and with Campbell adding a wide variety of percussion (both conventional and un-) along with vibraphone, french horn, and cornet, there’s a constantly evolving flow of different sounds. Bentley goes pizzicato at times on the cello to provide a bass substitute, and uses the bow as well as many different techniques to produce sound on her instruments. Improvisation this free is a risky proposition, but on Gefühlswallung these three masters pull it off with aplomb, creating a cascade of fascinating moments and a worthy tribute to a departed collaborator.
