The Blues against Youth — As the Tide Gets High and Low

Italian singer-songwriter Gianni Serusi AKA TBAY returns with another full length album of foot stomping, toe tapping, primitive outlaw country blues. Gianni TBAY is an incredible one-man band, excelling in a variety of Americana songs, some autobiographical (“Goin’ to East Texas,” “Say Something,” and “Particle Filter Blues”). As the Tide Gets High and Low is a tribute to the blues and to those who either made it to success or whose memory has been lost and forgotten. There are references to the “poor boys” who travelled from the cotton fields to the big city, looking for a better life, comparing them to today’s refugees whose voices go unheard. TBAY’s sound has matured and now integrates Appalachian country blues (think John Fahey and Doc Watson), slide guitar, Mississippi Delta blues, Texas country (Waylon, Willie, and the boys), Johnny Winter, and a bit of country gospel with a back-up singer evoking Dolly Parton. This is fun music, with “Goin’ to East Texas” starting and ending with announcements from the Greyhound bus driver as TBAY travelled to East Texas. One of the best tracks is “Particle Filter Blues,” which TBAY has also released as a video single. This song is an amalgam of Texas blues, Delta blues, honky-tonk, and Tex-Mex showcasing his writing and performance skills that make you just want to shout out “Yee haw!” This sixth full-length album is TBAY’s first on Turin’s Escape from Today label and is destined to garner more fans, as he most likely blows away his audience.
