T.A.P. — Paradigms

T.A.P. is a somewhat awkwardly-named project formed by Mark Cook of Herd of Insinct (and other bands) and Michael Jobborn of Head Joint. The duo began working on music and eventually recruited guitarist Suzi James of Fearful Symmetry. Collaborating remotely, they put together a set of tunes and invited other musicians to contribute: Gayle Ellett plays keyboards on five tracks; Paul Sears and Bill Bachman play drums on one track each, with the remainder of the drum parts either programmed by Jobborn or played by Cook. Jobborn and Cook are supremely compatible stylistically, and the result is very much along the same lines as Herd of Instinct. One of the tracks is called “The Progbient,” which indicates the band’s intention to cross progressive rock with cinematic ambience. Honestly, the prog wins out in almost all cases, though it’s prog more of the Djam Karet variety than any kind of 70s throwback. Some of the lead lines have a Frippish slant to them, but on the whole, the music is bright and rather cheerful, with only hints of darkness and dissonance. It could be viewed as a variety of space rock that’s infused with a bit of Crimsonian rhythm. It’s a safe bet that if you like any of the Herd of Instinct albums, or Spoke of Shadows, or anything recent by Djam Karet, you’ll enjoy T.A.P.
