Sun Ra and His Arkestra — Cosmo Sun Connection
(ReR Megacorp ReR SR1, 1985/1997, CD)

Cosmo Sun Connection Cover art

With its limited original LP pressing unavailable for many years now, this live set from 1984 has gained a degree of notoriety among collectors. Recommended Records has thankfully made this classic performance available again on this excellent sounding CD. One wishes they were able to hear more of this show, as the recording is only slightly over 30 minutes long. But what the listener does get is a solid, fairly representative glimpse at a mid 80s Sun Ra concert. The highlight is easily the wonderful 12-minute version of "Fate in a Pleasant Mood" which opens the set, featuring both the ebullient ensemble work characteristic of the Arkestra, and Sun Ra's strong piano and synth soloing. The rest of the set focuses more exclusively on Sun Ra's bluesy piano and alien organ and synth effects, though John Gilmore sneaks in a short, frenetic tenor solo as well. Cosmo Sun Connection is a welcomed rerelease, the proceeds of which are generously being donated by Recommended to the current Arkestra.
