Steve Roach — Pure Flow: Timeroom Editions Collection 1

Pure Flow: Timeroom Editions Collection 1 Cover art

Acting as a sampler of the long-form ambient music found on Roach's Timeroom Editions label, Pure Flow may or may not appeal to the Roach fan who already has most of this material. Except a short, unreleased piece called "Hovering," the CD is comprised of excerpts from Atmospheric Conditions, Slow Heat, The Dream Circle, and full pieces from Vine ~ Bark & Spore and Truth & Beauty. Having become intimately familiar with his classic long-form trio of albums, the music here definitely comes across as a "best of" type collection, and I can imagine this being somewhat redundant to the long-time Roach fan who owns already with this music. But for those curious about this slowly-evolving, atmospherically rich and patently tranquil side of Roach's music, this certainly would act as an excellent primer, as it both samples from several of these types of releases and arranges them into a new flow. And at a reduced price, it acts as a good companion to the Dreaming Now … Then retrospective of a few years ago. A good sampler for those wanting to take a taste of the amorphous, pan-timbral, drone music, especially if you are unfamiliar with the style. After all, the albums originating this music are some of the best in the genre.
