Despite Savage Republic having been around since the 80s, Meteora is my first exposure to this LA-based underground post punk band. They released five albums in the 80s, went on hiatus for 13 years to resurface briefly in support of their reissued albums on CD, revived again in 2005 to record a new album, and have remained active since. The current four-piece line up (Thom Fuhrmann, Ethan Port, Kerry Dowling, and Alan Waddington) has taken the band’s discography to a whole new level with their bombastic live performances. Touring Europe regularly, they have created a live set that never lets the audience catch a breath — four musicians ranging in age from 40 to 60 playing with the passion and energy of bands 1/3 their ages. Their sound is very similar to the post punk bands of the 80s: Killing Joke, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and Wire, and never sounding like a US band. They even honor Wire’s Graham Lewis by using his pandemic-inspired lyrics gifted to them for “Unprecedented.” The music ranges from hard-hitting bass playing to garage rock to gothic rock, providing a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks. Meteroa is a pretty cool album chock full of music that brings the 80s back to life.
