Masami Kawaguchi (Aihiyo, Kawaguchi Masami's New Rock Syndicate, Keiji Haino & The Masami Kawaguchi (LSD March, Kawaguchi Masami's New Rock Syndicate, Miminokoto, Usurabi, etc.) and Argentine experimental guitarist Anla Courtis (Reynols, Acid Mothers Reynols, Courtiszan, and many others) unite across continents on Godzilla's Quantum Sneeze, a remote collaboration recorded between Tokyo and Buenos Aires during 2025. Opening track "Valve Pyre Miasma" begins promisingly, building from throbbing pulses and delayed guitar textures into a dreamy, slowly expanding soundscape. The duo's experimental instincts are immediately on display, emphasizing atmosphere over structure.  From there, the album ventures deeper into abstract territory. "Silver Nictaphone's Mediumic Breath" combines scattered guitar figures, vocal sounds, and abrasive textures into a brief but challenging excursion. The ten-minute "Desert Nectar" abandons conventional form almost entirely, unfolding as a free-form interaction of guitar squeals, feedback, scraped strings, and spontaneous sonic events. Whether one hears exploration or aimlessness will depend largely on one's tolerance for non-idiomatic improvisation. "Astral Cord Boogie" offers the album's closest connection to rock music, with fuzzy guitar tones and hints of a recurring progression providing a welcome sense of momentum. The title track returns to more difficult terrain, emphasizing texture and dissonance over melody or development. Closing piece "Don't Ask for Stones on the Cliff" is the nearest thing here to a song, with a loose melodic thread and wordless vocals emerging from the haze. It provides a fitting conclusion to an album more concerned with exploration than destination. At just under forty minutes, Godzilla's Quantum Sneeze occupies the intersection of experimental rock, free improvisation, and noise music. Longtime followers of Kawaguchi and Courtis will likely find its unpredictability appealing. Others may find the journey considerably more demanding. As always with music this far outside conventional boundaries, approach with an open mind and adjusted expectations.
