Burning Wick Cover art

With Burning Wick, Satoko Fujii’s Quartet roars once again, following the excellent Dog Days of Summer (2024) with another set of unpredictable jazz. As with the previous release, Fujii (piano) is joined by Natsuki Tamura (trumpet), Tatsuya Yoshida (drums), and Hayakawa Takeharu (bass), and as I’ve written before, this combination of musicians is particularly explosive and appealing. Fujii and Tamura together form a well-known team, with well over a hundred releases together, often highly improvised, but also featuring composed elements. Yoshida is well known to fans of avant progressive rock for his work with Ruins, Koenjihyakkei, Korekyojinn, and many other groups, and his work in this more jazz-oriented setting is just as powerful as when he’s surrounded by electric guitars and synthesizers. As a bassist, Hayakawa is very assertive here, often on an electric instrument, much more oriented towards angular rhythms and a biting tone than fast runs or funky patterns. Even with all the energy and fury, Burning Wick presents moments of calm as well, exemplified by “Three Days Later,” which consists largely of a series of solo spots for each player: a meditative trumpet solo, then an upright bass solo from Hayakawa, then a lovely wandering piano section and a relatively calm drum part with soft mallets. The piece finishes with a piano / bass duet, a trumpet / drums duet, and finally all four together for a brief, almost hymn-like finale. If you like your jazz with an edge and don’t mind a touch of chaos, Burning Wick is a good bet.
