Always on the lookout for new and exciting bands to join the Fruits de Mer roster, Keith Jones discovered the Australian band The Sand Pebbles. They first got together in 2011 when three of the band members were script writers for the Australian TV soap opera Neighbors. To date they have seven albums to their credit with The Antagonist being their latest. The members of The Sand Pebbles are Christopher Hollow (bass), Gareth Skinner (cello), Leroy Cope (drums), Ben Michael X (guitar), Malcolm McDowell (guitar and vocals), and Andrew Tanner (guitar and vocals). “Sometimes a Great Notion,” title from the Ken Kesey novel, is the opening track on The Antagonist. When Keith Jones heard the song, he felt that it  was screaming to be released on a 7-inch. Their label, Kasumuen, agreed and the result is this new and extremely tasty vinyl disc. Keith is right, “Sometimes a Great Notion” is an aggressive, no-holds-barred, heavy psych song with crashing guitar chords that is over far too soon. In point of fact, it may be the best three minutes of your life that you will ever spend. The flip side, “Desire Lines,” is a song from their previous album Pleasure Maps. An entirely different side to the band as they painstakingly create their Australian brand of Krautrock, with motorik beats, throbbing bass, electronics, and buzzsaw guitars. I am reminded of Camera and Harmonia at their best. And “Desire Lines” is over before you know it as well. Both songs are equally excellent and well worth your attention. Highly recommended!
