Roger Knott — Pull the Plough That Furrows Deepest
(Bandcamp Think Like a Key TLAK1186, 2024, CD / DL)
by Jon Davis, Published 2025-02-13
Roger Knott’s history goes back to the early 70s with the band Lifeblud, though we first covered him with his Nashville Sessions, a collection of songs recorded in Nashville from 2005 to 2016, and a reflection of Knott’s reverence for American country music. Pull the Plough That Furrows Deepest finds him returning somewhat to his roots in psychedelic folk-rock, with a set of sunny, jangly tunes — in fact, the majority of the songs here were recorded in some form or other by Lifeblud back in the 70s. For reference, some groups that come to mind are Lindisfarne, Dr. Strangely Strange, and The Byrds. The instrumental parts are lovely, full of great acoustic and electric guitars, organ, and the occasional accordion or slide guitar, all backed by a solid rhythm section. Knott isn’t really a strong singer, but he makes the best of his voice, and he’s quite effective and expressive with his lyrics. One thing he’s mastered on these fourteen songs is coming up with songs that have hints of folk storytelling balanced with more contemporary relationship-related topics, all the while avoiding the pitfalls of cliché. You won’t hear any complex epics or effects-drenched guitar solos, but you will hear well-written songs played with integrity and not too many frills or concessions to modern fashion. It’s a singer-songwriter album the way it ought to be done, timeless in appeal and tasteful in execution.
