I’m not sure how a watermelon could be called psycho. How would you tell? Are some watermelons more psycho than others, or are they all like that? The Psychowatermelon at hand is a duo consisting of Alex Savelli and Tommaso Michienzi, two veterans of various projects in various genres. They’re united in a love of old school krautrock, experimental electronics, and movie soundtracks, and they bring all that and more to the table in Ghostpiracy. With Savelli’s electric guitars providing a human touch and Michienzi’s electronics providing ever-changing atmospheres, the album has an appealing variety of sound to recommend it. Guest drummer Andrea Lamb d’Aniello provides a lot of the album’s energy, with beats that are powerful enough to grab interest and subtle enough to hold it. There’s a feeling of playful absurdity about the project that infuses all twelve tracks, a willingness to throw together things that might seem unrelated, like vintage analog electronics with modern software plugins. It might seem strange to say that balance is a key factor in music with such a feeling of spontaneity, but there is a good balance between weirdness and sounds that are more conventional — it’s never so far out that a listener feels lost or without points of reference. Trippy effects are paired with funky sequences, wild filter sweeps fit alongside groovy guitar riffs. Probably the main audience for Ghostpiracy would be fans of space rock, but psych-heads and even electronic music devotees should be able to find things they like here.
