Prudence — Negatives
(Bandcamp no#, 2022, DL)

Negatives Cover art

Prudence (AKA Tom Crandles) is an Australian lo-fi musician recording music much in the same manner as nick nicely. But there the comparison ends. Whereas nick nicely constantly twiddles with effects and mixes to produce some freaky psychedelia, Crandles confines himself to moody, introspective, sad songs with sometimes heavily processed megaphone vocals. Intially the first two or three songs sound interesting, but the more you hear, the more it all sounds similar. There are some musical references to 70s/80s New Wave pop and I find myself more engaged with his music when he is not singing. In point of fact, I find the final track, the instrumental “Recognition,” to be the best on the album with its soft, mellow, and slow atmosphere. If you enjoy songs about the vagaries of life’s turmoil, recovery, and pain, then you may find Crandles’ idiosyncratic musical vision of interest.
