Primož Bončina & Phil Maguire — Stone and Worship
(Bandcamp Cloudchamber Recordings, 2025, CD / DL)

Primož Bončina is a minimalist guitarist and electronic musician who explores microtonalities and distortion timbres. His partner in crime, Phil Maguire, is a minimalist musician with an affinity for deep explorations of bass frequencies and intuitively determined harmonic series. Together, their shared enthusiasm for drone music and eternally sustained tones, meditation, and contemplation resulted in their debut release, Stone and Worship. They used the cellar of a former Catholic seminary and its otherworldly acoustics to enhance their slowly morphing compositions. Stone and Worship consists of four compositions ranging from fifteen to twenty minutes in duration: “Dolorosa (with Golem Mécanique),” “(Vangelis) Acolyte (with Dylan Desmond),” “Movements in Dust,” and “Megalithic Fountain.” These four pieces explore the interactive ground between minimalistic drone music and instrumental and vocal narratives. “Dolorosa” is a slow moving atmospheric piece with Karen Jebane (AKA Golem Mécanique) providing disembodied, haunting, and undulating vocals. Don’t be fooled by the song title, there is nothing that remotely resembles Vangelis on “(Vangelis) Acolyte.” This piece features sustained organ chords for a full sepuchral and hypnotic listening experience. “Movements in Dust” is akin to watching dancing dust motes drifting in shafts of sunlight in darkened room. The low rumbling guitar chords morph from one undefined shape to another metallic chord cluster. And the closing track, “Megalithic Fountain,” is a multi-layered sonic fest of distorted and garbled electric guitars that climaxes with a severe roaring chaos of sound. Stone and Worship is quite an impressive set of experimental sonic compositions.
