Pogo Pops — Daylight

With Daylight, Norway’s Pogo Pops present a set of nine more sunny songs built on jangly guitars and catchy melodies with more than a hint of 80s pop. When I hear Pogo Pops, I often wonder if I’ve stumbled upon a lost album by The Church. Aside from the vocal resemblance Frank Hammersland has to Steve Kilby, they favor a similar lush bed of guitars with dense reverb. The rhythm parts provide energy, though when you listen closely you realize that they’ve mastered the art of making the simple sound complex. Keyboards are used sparingly to fill out the sound, as are backing vocal parts. Songs like “Maybe It Was Just a Dream” and “Dancing to the Beat of My Heart” should appeal to listeners who loved “Under the Milky Way.” The shimmering hint of psychedelia is fun without resorting to cliches. There’s a similarity to early REM as well, though Pogo Pops are more polished and smoothly produced. There should always be a place in the world for well-crafted pop songs, and this band certainly has the knack of creating them.
