Peel, Palmer, Tausig and Gould — Synesthesia

Starting with Cream in 1966 and climaxing in the 80s, supergroups were all the rage. Now Fruits de Mer has released Synesthesia, which could be viewed as by the supergroup of Icarus Peel (guitars), Steve Palmer (soundscapes and composition), Jay Tausig (drums), and Rob Gould (keyboards). The project grew out of a conversation between Peel and Palmer to create immersive, atmospheric music, which was then expanded with drums and keyboards for four ten-minute instrumental tracks: “Coral Correlation,” “Superpurplesunshine,” “The Ochre Cobra,” and “The Turquoise Shards of Atlantis.” These four tracks mix delayed guitar, dreamy and trance inducing melodies, Krautrock, dissonance, and buzz saw synth patches for a truly fine listening experience. The band claims influences ranging from Tangerine Dream, Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, The Damned, Steve Hillage, Jeff Beck, Krautrock, Canterbury rock, the Vertigo label, and vegetarianism, to author Arthur Koestler and painter Gustav Klimt (although not all at the same time). The result is a modern day homage to a long lost 70s psychedelic progressive rock album, the kind that people would listen to in the dark in order concentrate fully on bands like Gong, the musical equivalence of omphaloskepsis. I am a sucker for keyboards and Gould does not disappoint with his Hammond organ chops as well as his use of dissonance. Each track is unique, with “The Turquoise Shards of Atlantis” sounding like a mysterious 70s sci-fi soundscape. Fruits de Mer and their long time musical friends has done it again, releasing a new “long-lost” album destined to become a classic.
