Paul Lake — Dear Mr Fantasy / Child of the Moon
(Fruits de Mer Friends of the Fish 83, 2024, 7" lathe cut)

by Henry Schneider, Published 2024-11-17

Dear Mr Fantasy / Child of the Moon Cover art

Just like his bandmate Dave Mclean from The Chemistry Set, Paul Lake is releasing a 7-inch lathe cut single on Fruits de Mer Records this year. Whereas Dave covered the Kaleidoscope’s “Faintly Blowing,” Paul covers two 60s songs:  Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and the Rolling Stones’ “Child of the Moon,” the B-side to “Jumping Jack Flash.” He does Traffic proud with his five-minute interpretation of “Dear Mr. Fantasy” with his cool and freaky guitar solo where he lets loose over the smooth and dreamy surreal foundation of acoustic guitar, recorder, percussion, bass, etc. “Dear Mr. Fantasy” is a song Paul has been playing since he was 17 and it brings back sentimental memories of playing with his youthful bands. In his teens, Paul went through a phase of collecting original Rolling Stones singles and discovered “Child of the Moon,” which totally intrigued him and he always fancied trying his hand at covering it. His version is almost two minutes longer than the Stones’ and his vocals are mellower than Jagger’s. Yet Paul’s addition of night sounds, reversed tapes, sitar, and organ proves to be an excellent and freakier recreation of this obscure Stones song that serves as a bridge between Their Satanic Majesties Request and Beggars Banquet. This lathe-cut is limited to 80 copies and is sure to be highly sought after on its release in early December. I am only guessing here, but if you are not one of the fortunate 80 to snag a copy, the music may be available on The Chemistry Set’s Bandcamp page just like Dave Mclean’s lathe-cut from earlier this year.
