Dave McLean — Faintly Blowing

Faintly Blowing Cover art

Dave McLean is a founding member of the cult London psych band The Chemistry Set, which began in 1987 and has been appearing on Fruits de Mer since 2011. In 2024 Dave decided to release his first solo single, a cover of the UK Kaleidoscope’s classic song “Faintly Blowing” from 1969. The Chemistry Set used to play this song in the late 80s, but never recorded it, so Dave decided to record the song in the same manner as the early Chemistry Set cassettes, recording the song in a bedroom, not a studio. The result is two versions of the song, stereo and mono, on an eight-inch lathe-cut disc that sounds far trippier than the original. In fact, Jason Barnard of The Strange Brew podcast sent a preview to Kaleidoscope’s Peter Daltrey who replied “It’s always puzzled me why our catalogue was not covered by other bands, this version is so true to the original but Dave has put his own stamp on it, I particularly liked the ending.” I agree, Dave has taken the original, added jangle guitars, trippy psych jamming, and a swirling feedback outro. Faintly Blowing is bedroom mind-blowing psych at its best. Limited to 100 copies of the lathe cut, all are sold out, but Dave plans to issue a single with another mix of the song later this year.
